“Cassis” by Bill “Woo” Correira donated by Leslie Curran of ARTicles Gallery.36x36”
Bill Correira, a beloved local artist who went by the nickname “Woo”, specialized in mixed media figure studies and marine life for most of his short artistic career. Well-loved by fellow artists, the arts community, and anyone who crossed his path in St. Petersburg, all were saddened to hear of his passing from brain cancer in 2012, at the age of 43.
The artist gained an appreciation for living in the moment and fully engaging in his work as a Painter. He opened a gallery on the 600 block of Central Avenue, an area of downtown revitalized by the artists who rented shops and galleries there. He would often be seen painting outside on the sidewalk, and had a penchant for mentoring others about developing, “an artist’s life.”
His work is widely collected.

From an interview with Dex Fabian from I Love the ‘Burg: “I find my art difficult to describe, but I think if it is categorized, it would probably fall somewhere between expressionistic and fauvist. I’ve grown from a start in somewhat traditional watercolors to bolder, more emotionally powerful pieces that elicit strong responses from viewers. My work has changed dramatically through the years, not so much due to experience, but rather because I get very excited about other artwork I see and want to try a similar style or technique. I’m always on the move mentally, making it very difficult to put together a large body of work that galleries insist on. My greatest inspiration comes from other artists, some very famous like Gauguin and Cezanne, some with whom I’ve studied, like the late Marjorie Dean Andruk, and contemporaries I discover in surfing the internet. The resources available to us now are mind boggling. No matter what advice I need on products, methods, whatever, it’s just a click away.”
The Artist's Magazine named her one of the top ten artists (over 60 years of age) in the country one year and that same year, Watercolor Artist Magazine cited her in its December issue as one of 10 American artists to watch in coming years. Her work has also been featured in On View Magazine and Art and Beyond Magazine in 2012."
